Maps and transport

Travel links with Heriot-Watt’s campus are excellent. Edinburgh is Scotland’s capital city, so national and international travel links are well developed.

Travelling to Edinburgh by air

Direct air links to and from Edinburgh are growing all the time, as the city continues to develop as a major European financial, business, cultural and tourism hub. Edinburgh International Airport is served by scheduled national and international flights. There are regular direct flights to London, Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt, Brussels, Zurich and New York, to name but a few. The airport is on the west of the city, just three miles from the campus. The journey by taxi takes less than 10 minutes. Transfers from Edinburgh (EDI) airport can be arranged during the admission process.

Getting around the UK

If you like the idea of getting out and about exploring all that Scotland and the UK has to offer, you can be on the main arterial routes in a matter of minutes.

By rail: Edinburgh is located on a fast, express rail line to London and served by Inter-City 125 mph high-speed trains. The frequent rail service from Edinburgh to London takes only 4.5 hours from city centre to city centre. Edinburgh is also well networked with regular rail services to the rest of Scotland and the UK.

By coach: All national coach services to Edinburgh arrive at St Andrew Square bus station, situated at the east end of Princes Street in the city centre.

By road: Edinburgh is the hub of an efficient road network. An extensive motorway system makes for ease of access to the rest of the UK and to Europe.

By air: Regular air services are provided to all major UK cities. Frequent flights to and from London (Heathrow) are a walk-on shuttle service with a flight time of 55 minutes.

Getting to the City centre from campus

The campus is on the western boundary of Edinburgh, in Riccarton, just 7 miles from the city centre. It is easy to get into the city:

By Bus: There are regular bus services into the heart of the city from the campus – and there is a night bus service for returning home safely in the evening. The journey to Heriot-Watt University takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes. The Hermiston Park and Ride service, next to the International Study Centre, is served at peak times by a bus every 5 minutes to Edinburgh City centre.

By Taxi: The journey takes about 20 minutes. The main train station in Edinburgh, Waverly, has a large taxi rank, and it should cost approximately £18 to the University.
