Academic Schools at the University

Teaching at Heriot-Watt is structured around six schools of study, each with several departments reflecting the University's emphasis on professional courses which prepare students for graduate level employment. Once you have completed your ISC course and embarked upon your degree programme, you will be registered in one of the schools, depending on your degree subject.
School of Management and Languages
The School is one of the University’s largest academic Schools. The School is committed to being a leading provider of high quality education and research in its key areas of expertise - Accountancy and Finance; Economics; Languages and Management. Both Management and languages achieved a grade four rating in the most recent national Research Assessment Exercise (RAE).
Subjects include: Accountancy and Finance / Economics / Languages and Intercultural Studies / Management
School of the Built Environment
The School offers a range of educational opportunities spanning the professions involved in the planning, design, construction and development of our environment and infrastructure. The School has an excellent national and international research reputation as one of the top Built Environment research institutions in the UK.
Subjects include: Architectural Engineering / Civil Engineering and Structural Engineering / Construction Management and Surveying / Urban Studies
School of Textiles and Design
The School is a national centre of excellence for study and research in textiles and related industries. Courses match the needs of the high-tech textile and fashion industries and we are engaged in leading-edge research projects in textiles, design, fashion, clothing and colour science.
School of Engineering and Physical Sciences
The School enjoys an international reputation for its research and its close connection with the professional and industrial world of sciences, engineering and technology. It spans the boundaries between the traditionally distinct academic disciplines of chemical engineering, chemistry, electrical, electronic and computer engineering, mechanical engineering, and physics.

School of Life Sciences
The School prides itself on providing a friendly yet rigorous learning environment and incorporates a number of specialist centres that aid teaching and research, including the world renowned International Centre for Brewing and Distilling and the Centre for Marine Biodiversity and Biotechnology. Interests span the life sciences, from microbe to human, and the impact of man on terrestrial and marine environments.
Subjects include: Applied Psychology / Biology / Sport and Exercise Science
School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences
The School is a collegiate grouping of three discipline areas: Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics; Computer Science; and Mathematics. It has excellent teaching gradings, and achieved grade 5 in the RAE for research, becoming a lively, international centre for leading-edge developments and exciting new courses.
