Foundation Year: Business, Hospitality, Law, Management, Marketing, Social Studies, and Transport & Logistics

This route leads to degrees in fields such as Business, Hospitality, Law, Management, Marketing, Social Studies and Logistics. A route is formed of core modules and route modules.

Core modules

Student looking at books in the libraryThe programme's core modules will improve your English skills and strengthen your mathematics skills. It will also introduce students to study skills such as time management, essay writing and information sourcing. Another important core module is project study, which introduce students to project planning and development - this is a key skill since most degrees now include some sort of a project.

Foundation English Skills 1, Foundation English Skills 2, Study Skills in the British Environment, Project Study - including Word Processing Skills, and Core Mathematics

Route modules

The route modules will enable students to develop a deep understanding of the subject area that they would like to study their degree in. For example if you want to do a business or hospitality degree, you will need to have a deep understanding of economics.

Route modules explained:

Principles of Economics 1: Economic systems, types of goods, allocation of resources, elasticity, price controls, types of markets, cost and revenue, economies of scale and market failure.

Principles of Economics 2: Aggregate demand and aggregate supply, economic policies, inflation, unemployment, international trade and development economics.

Business Law: The English legal system, business organisations, contract law and consumer protection.

You choose one of the two following modules:

(a) Introduction to Financial Accountancy: Double entry book-keeping, preparation of trial balances, profit and loss statements, depreciation, limited companies, manufacturing accounts and interpretation of accounts.
OR
(b) English Legal System: Concepts of law, the relationship between law, justice and morality, the sources of law, including British and European Union (EU) legislation and the doctrine of
precedent; the Civil and Criminal Courts and the role of the Judiciary.

You choose one of the two following modules:

(a) Introduction to Business Studies: Understanding of the operational and strategic problems facing business people in the modern market economy. The module will focus on a wide range of issues, such as management, human resource practice, marketing and ethical aspects.
OR
(b) British Political System: Gain an understanding of the British political system, the basic principles of the British constitution, civil liberties and their relation to the judicial system; how parliament works, including the electoral system, political parties and the legislative process; the composition and functions of the government, the civil service and Britain’s relationship to the EU.

Entry requirements See admissions section for academic and English Language entrance requirements. Please note that on application, you might be required to submit a portfolio. 
Course structure The programme is modular and comprises five core subjects and up to five route modules. You take three modules in term 1, three in term 2, and up to four in term 3.
Assessment End of module/term: a combination of examinations, coursework, presentations and extended essays.
Continuous: a mixture of lecture classes, small-group seminar work and directed self-study.
Progression On successful completion, you progress to the first year of a University of Huddersfield undergraduate degree in selected subject areas.
