Maps and transport

Huddersfield is easy to get to by road, rail or air. It is at the heart of the UK close to major motorway and rail links, and two airports.

Getting to the University by air

When you apply, you can arrange a taxi transfer from either Manchester (MAN) or Leeds/Bradford (LBA) airports. See the price of airport transfers on the fees page.

The University is close to Manchester International Airport. Manchester is approximately 28 miles away and the journey by taxi to the University will take around an hour. There is also a train station at the airport. By rail the journey takes about 50 minutes to Huddersfield station.

It is possible to fly to Leeds/Bradford Airport, but there are fewer international flights direct this airport than Manchester.

If you are flying in to one of the London airports (Gatwick or Heathrow), the journey from London to Huddersfield is approximately three hours by train.

Getting to the town centre from campus

The campus is very convenient for all your social, travel and entertainment needs. The University is on the ring road, just five minutes walk from the town centre. It is approximately a ten minute walk to the bus station or train station.

Travelling between the out-of-town residences and campus

Students may purchase an annual bus pass for £5. Following purchase of the bus pass, travel on the buses running between the University and both out-of-town residences is free during the day (8am-6pm). Outside of this time, the bus service costs £1 per trip. For Storthes Hall a dedicated shuttle bus runs during term-time. Ashenhurst students have use of the public bus.

The journey from the University takes 15 minutes on foot or 5-10 minutes by bus to Ashenhurst House, and 20-25 minutes by bus to Storthes Hall.

A taxi (from recommended company, Huddersfield Taxis) costs £5 from Storthes Hall to the University, and £2.50 from Ashenhurst to the University.

See a map showing the residences and the distance from the University and town centre.

Getting around the UK

Huddersfield is excellently placed to explore the rest of the UK. The town is less than one hour from the major English cities of Liverpool, Leeds, York, Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffield, and Birmingham. It is only three hours from London, and three and a half hours from the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh.

By rail: Huddersfield has good rail links to most parts of the UK. Links to London are via Wakefield and the fast East Coast line - approximate journey time three hours. There is a regular service of up to four trains an hour to Leeds and Manchester. Leeds is 25 minutes and Manchester 35 minutes on the Transpennine Express rail service.

By road: The University campus is within easy reach of the M62 and the rest of the UK motorway network. There is easy access to the Peak District National Park and a number of other places of interest.
