Historical and modern buildings side by side
The University campus straddles the recently restored Huddersfield Narrow Canal. Capitalising on Huddersfield’s industrial past, the original textile mills on the site have been imaginatively converted. Combined with investment in new buildings, the University has expanded over recent years.
Canalside, an impressive refurbished mill complex, houses mathematics and computing, engineering and design. The Grade II listed Firth Street Mills was recreated at a cost of £3.2 million providing more teaching space. A landscaped area along the pleasant canal offers additional green areas and 'pocket parks'.
At the entrance to the campus, the University’s main reception area is a helpful place to get maps and other information. See a map of campus. The large Central Services Building is home to the library, administration and student support.
£4 million has been spent on a purpose-built Students’ Union Building, with a range of social, leisure and retail services at the heart of campus. It houses a non-alcoholic as well as alcoholic bar. A state-of-the-art Creative Arts Building houses a recital hall, electro-acoustic research studio, new art and design studios and live recording facilities.
