University academic resources and facilities

From specially designed group study rooms in the College of Business's Showker Hall to the Sensory Neural Engineering Lab, Electron Microscopy Lab and the other 27 laboratories found in the University's Integrated Science and Technology complex, state-of-the-art academic facilities are everywhere at JMU:

Libraries

The Carrier Library at James Madison UniversityJames Madison University has 3 libraries which support research, study and instruction in the use of information resources:

  • Carrier Library (the main university library) 
  • East Campus Library
  • Music Library

The Libraries house more than 700,000 volumes, including books, periodicals, and audiovisual materials, and over a million microform pieces. JMU Libraries is also an authorized US Government Document Depository, with access to thousands of selected online and print documents through the library catalog. In addition to subscriptions to more than 12,800 journals, access to over 2,500 online journals is provided through JMU Libraries' membership in VIVA, the Virtual Library of Virginia. Items not available within the Libraries or through online resources can be retrieved through Interlibrary Loan with virtually any academic library in the country.

During semester time, both libraries are open until 2am Sun-Wed, until midnight on Thursday, and until 8pm on Friday and Saturday. Most of the online resources on the library website can also be accessed from any computer on campus.


Information Technology

Computer Support provides general computing labs in various locations around campus for student use, including over 100 personal computers in the Libraries. In total, more than 500 Windows and Mac computers are available, with a variety of word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, presentation and statistical software. There are two labs open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Additional resources include Ashby Assessment Lab, departmental labs, and technology classrooms.

IT support
Students have access to the Computing HelpDesk for answers to computing questions, or can get immediate help through JMU's Computing Self-Help resource.

University network
CampusNet is JMU's on-campus student Ethernet network that gives students high-speed access to e-mail, the Internet and other network resources from their residence hall rooms. There is one data port for each occupant of the room. Computers must meet minimum system requirements in order to take advantage of the service.

Wireless access
There are 160 wireless access points in over 65 different locations on campus including the libraries, the bookstore, Top Dog Café and the quad. Wireless is available in all academic buildings and in designated areas in the residence halls.

Training
Computing services also offers computing courses, tutorials, and instructional technology.


Writing Center

The Center helps students help themselves by providing individualized instruction during any stage of the writing process. The Writing Consultants offer students help with scholarly and creative work, business writing, formatting and citation, grammar and punctuation, and research strategies. The University Writing Center offers:

  • Individualized writing consultations (free of charge)
  • Online writing resources
  • Computer lab and study space
  • Grammar Proficiency Tests
  • Link Library: accessible collection of handouts, video tutorials, tip sheets, and other writing guides.
