Pre-Master's for non-qualified students: master's qualifying program

For international students whose undergraduate qualification is a 3-year degree or diploma, we offer a qualifying Pre-Master's Program. No GRE required on application!

The admissions criteria for master's programs at James Madison University includes four years of study beyond High School level during the equivalent of a US baccalaureate degree. The new Pre-Master's Program for Non-Qualified students is designed for international students whose undergraduate qualification would not normally meet those academic requirements.

'Academic bridge' program

This preparatory program offers an 'academic bridge' to fill the gap between your previous diploma or degree of at least 3 years duration, and the standard entry requirements of James Madison University's Graduate School.

The Pre-Master's Program for non-qualified students allows international students to earn additional credits through supplemental undergraduate and pre-requisite coursework, and qualify for admission to four master's programs at James Madison University.

Students on this program come from widely different academic backgrounds, and so your application will be assessed on an individual basis and you will be clearly advised about the length of your Study Plan and of the courses you are expected to complete during the Pre-Master's Program.

Program length

The duration of the Pre-Master's program for non-qualified students varies between 2 semesters (9 months) and 4 semesters (16 months) depending on your level of English at entry. This is determined by the result of your Study Group English Language test.

  • Use the study timeline to calculate how long your graduate study in the USA will take.

Curriculum

You develop English language skills, receive a thorough introduction to the styles of learning and teaching in the US university environment, and are introduced to a range of study skills particularly relevant to graduate study.

In addition, you take the necessary University credit courses at the undergraduate level that are pre-requisites for your chosen master's program. These courses have been selected to provide the essential preparatory elements for your graduate degree.

The Pre-Master's Program prepares you for the standard graduate admission test - the GRE - required for entry to James Madison University Graduate School.
