Athletics at James Madison University

JMU has an extensive program of nationally competitive intercollegiate sports for men and women, that has brought national championships in two sports along with dozens of regional and conference titles.

JMU Dukes' Athletic team logo

James Madison University sponsors 18 intercollegiate athletics that compete at the Division I level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The NCAA is a membership organization of 1,281 US colleges and universities that participate in intercollegiate athletics.

James Madison University's athletic teams use the name "Dukes" in competition, with the Duke Dog, a gray bulldog dressed in a purple cape and crown, as the school's mascot.

The University is proud to have won two national championships:

  • JMU women's field hockey won the NCAA field hockey championship in 1994.
  • JMU American football won the NCAA Division I-AA national title in 2004 and appeared in the playoffs in 2006, 07 & 08.

Head Coach Mickey Matthews was named the national Division I-AA Coach of the Year by the America Football Coaches Association in January 2005. James Madison's baseball team advanced to the 1983 College World Series.

JMU's women's athletics tradition is among the oldest in the nation, dating nearly back to the institution's founding in 1908. JMU was among the first of US institutions to provide well-rounded overall intercollegiate offerings for females.

Intramural sports

The intramural sports program is organized within the University, and offers team sports, individual/dual sports, educational programs and special events. The program encourages teamwork, sportsmanship and leadership in a clean, safe, and social setting on the JMU campus. There are 3 levels of competition:

Recreation level: for those who are new or just want to participate in a fun and social environment.
Purple level: for those who have experience playing the sport and an understanding of rules and strategies involved.
Gold level: for those who have the knowledge and skills necessary to play against the most competitive students, faculty and staff.
