Keele has an excellent central location in England, making it very easy to travel around the country by bus, coach or train. There are regular buses from campus to all parts of the local area.

Your nearest town

The nearest town to Keele is Newcastle-under-Lyme (normally just called ‘Newcastle’ – not to be confused with Newcastle-upon-Tyne which is a large city in the north-east of England). It has:

  • selection of shops selling clothes, jewellery, electrical goods, books, CDs, DVDs
  • excellent choice of pubs and restaurants
  • two large supermarkets
  • Chinese medicine centre
  • Street market on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday - a cheap source of pots and pans, crockery, bedlinen and clothing
  • Farmers’ market on the last Friday of the month - for cheap fruit and vegetables
  • large, multi-screen cinema
  • swimming pool
  • public library with CDs, DVD and books to borrow

Your nearest large shopping centre

Hanley, which is easily reached by bus from campus, has a large shopping centre and a wide variety of shops and facilities.


Other entertainment facilities

Festival Park, located between Newcastle and Hanley, has a cinema, bowling alley, a dry ski-slope, and a swimming pool with chutes, slides, etc.

The main theatre for the area is the New Victoria Theatre, just outside the centre of Newcastle on the road to Hanley. There are regular features including a Shakespeare play in the early summer, and a pantomime at Christmas. The main theatre in Stoke-on-Trent is The Regent in Hanley, where West End plays and musicals are performed as well as a pantomime at Christmas.

Hanley has a great range of clubs and bars featuring big name DJs and pop acts.


Although campus life will keep you busy, take time to explore the local area, which has plenty to offer.

Your local area

The area around Keele is called ‘The Potteries’ because this is the UK’s leading centre for pottery and fine china. There are a number of factories offering tours and demonstrations, together with the chance to visit their ‘seconds’ shops. The visitor centre at the Wedgwood factory has an audio tour and visual displays, with interesting background material and history of the area. The history of The Potteries is detailed at the Gladstone Pottery Museum in Hanley.


Your nearest large cities

Manchester, Birmingham and Liverpool are all within an hour or so travel time of Keele. London is less than two hours’ train journey away and you can book in advance for cheap rail and coach tickets.
