Foundation Year graduates receive Lancaster University scholarships for academic excellence

October 2010Former ISC Students

Some 38 former Foundation Year students have benefited from Lancaster University scholarships for their remarkable academic achievements. All students have since started their degrees at the university after passing their Foundation courses at the Lancaster University International Study Centre (ISC) with flying colours.

“I would like to congratulate Lancaster University ISC students who qualified for a LUMS scholarship this year. A record 38 students qualified for the £1000.00 scholarship on the basis of academic achievement, scoring significantly higher marks than their progression requirements”, says the Head of Lancaster University ISC, Mr. Sunil Banga.

Foundation Year students are expected to pass with required grades before they join degree studies. For those students who pass with even higher marks, Lancaster University rewards such excellence with scholarships that are put towards the first year of their degree study.

The success of these students seem to suggest that given the right kind of support and monitoring, any student could excel. However, as much as this kind of achievement is a showcase of hard work by both the students and the staff members at Lancaster University ISC, Mr. Banga gave most of the credit to his former students, saying that:

"The scholarships are a recognition of students' great potential, and I am very pleased with the commitment they have shown. They attended all classes regularly and completed all tasks and assignments in the Foundation Year to a high standard, so well done all!”

The International Foundation Year is a degree preparation programme for international students who have completed High School in their home countries but do not yet meet all the entrance requirements for a degree at Lancaster University. Based on-campus, Foundation Year students study for three-terms to boost their academic knowledge, English language and study skills before continuing to degree study.

All three national university league tables this year saw Lancaster in the best ten.

Ranking 6th in the Guardian League table, 8th in the Independent’s Complete University Guide and finally 10th in the Times’ Good University Guide, Lancaster has rightfully claimed its well deserved new status in style.

Lancaster has always been one of the top ranked of the North West universities but this year rose 13 places to break into the top ten for the first time in the Times Good University Guide 2011.

High scores for student satisfaction and better graduate prospects in The Independent’s Complete University Guide 2011 saw Lancaster beat some 97 institutions in the UK.

As if that alone was not enough, in the Guardian League table of June 2010, Lancaster did not only emerge to be the Lion King of the North but it also beat some 111 universities countrywide.

In terms of research, Lancaster is ranked joint 15th out of 147 UK institutions for the amount of research judged to be of world leading importance.

This record really leaves all at Lancaster proud and inviting more and more prospective students to come and join the success journey that begins at Lancaster University.
