Guardianship policy for under 18s

To comply with the University of Leicester’s policy, all international students under the age of 18 must have a UK-based guardian.

An accredited* UK guardianship company, Bright World, will act as UK guardians for students, for each term that they are under the age of 18. From June 2009, parents of applicants under the age of 18 will need to cover the cost of a UK guardian. See fees page.

If you will be under the age of 18 on the first day of term (see term dates) at the start of your ISC course, please download the Guardianship application form (PDF, 42kB). Parents must complete and return this simple form prior to the student's arrival in the UK. It is important that we are informed of any medical conditions, allergies etc.

  • Students under the age of 18 at the start of their course who already have a UK guardian (e.g. a family member in the UK) will not require guardianship from Bright World.
  • Students over the age of 18 at the start of their course do not require UK guardianship.

* Accredited by AEGIS (Association for the Education and Guardianship of International Students)

Important note for applicants from the UK and European Union

There is a very high level of competition worldwide for degree places at the University of Leicester. Numbers applying from within the UK and the European Union region are especially high. Therefore, we do not accept HEU* students. Instead, we strongly recommend that these students consider joining an A Level programme.

*Definition of HEU students

HEU (Home/EU) students include the following categories:

  • Permanent residents in the UK who have been resident in the UK for three years
  • EEA (European Economic Area) migrant workers and their families in the UK who have lived in the EEA for three years
  • EU nationals and their children who have lived in the EEA for three years
  • Refugees (recognised by the UK government) and their families
  • People who have applied for asylum and have been granted leave to enter/remain, and their families

The rules on whether you are classified as a ‘home’ or ‘overseas’ student are strictly defined by the British Government; universities do not have discretion.
