Leisure time
Your Students' Union
The Students’ Union is run by students, for students, and provides everything you’ll need to make your day packed full of sport, fun and new experiences.
Leicester SU won Student Union of the Year 2005 – and were nominated again in 2006 and 2007, making it the first union to ever be shortlisted for three years in a row. The Union has been singled out for its dedication to student welfare, support given to student societies, and contribution made to charity by its associations.
With three bars, two nightclubs, more than 100 societies and 30 sports clubs the Students’ Union at Leicester is a fantastic place to unwind, make new friends and gain important skills and experience.
Clubs and Societies
A big part of student life is joining clubs, societies and associations. These are partly funded by the Union and offer a chance to
get involved in a huge range of activities such as politics, religion, music, performing and a whole host more. There’s bound to be something that interests you and it’s a great way to make new friends and pursue, or take up, a new interest. There are also associations such as RAG (raising and giving) and Contact (student volunteering), which allow you to put something back into the community and to get some valuable experience for your CV.
Student media
The Ripple is an independent newspaper of the Students’ Union. It is published fortnightly during term time and contains news and views from across the University of Leicester. You could become a writer, editor, cartoonist or designer.
Lush FM is the University's very own radio station. Broadcasting live on FM for up to two months of the year and all year round on the internet,. It is ideal for anyone wishing to gain experience in media, broadcasting or marketing.
The official University of Leicester Students’ Union website gets more than one million hits a month and is always looking for students to get involved.
