October 2010 - Welcome new students

Last week saw the start of the new term at the University of Leicester International Study Centre.

On Monday 27th September the ISC opened its doors to international students from eighteen countries. This year saw a record number of students arrive, just two years after the centre opened.

Student Union at LeicesterAfter students enrolled at the centre on the Monday they had time to explore the campus and visit the brand new Student Union building. At the Student Union, international student helpers including some ISC graduates were on hand to answer the new students' questions. The students also had the opportunity to sign up to activities to help them familiarise themselves with the local area and meet new friends such as a bike ride around Leicester or a trip to the Chinese supermarket.

On Tuesday morning, the students all gathered in one of the university lecture theatres for the official welcome from Dr Gwynne Harries, Head of the International Study Centre. Dr Harries introduced the teaching and support staff at the ISC before handing over to some guest speakers from the university. Representatives from the business, law, psychology, computing, sciences and engineering faculties addressed the students about the degree options available at the university of Leicester.


September 2010: The biggest climber in worlid rankings

The University of Leicester has climbed a record 27 places in the QS World University rankings, more than any other UK university.

The University of Leicester is in the top 2% of the world's universities at 169th place, last year the university reached 196th place.

QS World University Rankings® measure university research quality, graduate employability, teaching commitment and international commitment. QS rankings use a combination of global surveys and audited data including citation counts from Scopus, the world’s largest database of academic publishing.

Richard Taylor, Director of Marketing, said: "This new report confirms Leicester's position amongst the world's leading universities "This is good news for the University, the city and our region as we work together to share the benefits of our internationally-significant work."


June 2010 - Leicester excells in the 2011 university rankings

Times Goog University Guide 2011

Leicester has been ranked the 15th best university in the UK for the third consecutive year in the 2011 Times Good University Guide. Leicester is the highest ranking university in the East Midlands region.

By studying a foundation programme at Leicester International Study Centre, international students can progress on to one of the top ranking degrees offered at the University of Leicester.

Degree pathways from the Engineering Physics and Mathematics Foundation route were ranked amongst the top degrees in the UK. Most notably Leicester was ranked 6th for Engineering and 7th for Geology.

Leicester’s Biological Sciences programmes were ranked 11th in the UK. International students can progress on to these programmes from the Science & Computing Foundation route.

Business degrees at Leicester were ranked 15th in the league table and students can progress directly on to a business degree from the Economics, Business and Social Sciences Foundation.

The university has also climbed the rankings by three places in the Guardian University Guide, securing 12th place with 92% student and staff satisfaction.


November 2009 - Scholarship Awards for four outstanding students

Prateek Sengupta was awarded a scholarship by University of Leicester

The University of Leicester awarded scholarships to four of our students, following their graduation from the International Foundation Year. The awards represent a reduction on tuition fees and are valid for each year of the course, excluding a year in industry if taken.

Prateek Sengupta from India is now studying a 4 year BEng in General Engineering with Industry degree, having successfully progressed from the Engineering, Physics and Maths pathway.

Both Shayna Franzetti from the USA and Wui Wing Wong from Hong Kong took the Science and Computing pathway and are now studying for a BSc in Medical Physiology and BSc Medical Genetics respectively.

A BSc in Banking and Finance is the chosen degree of Runtian Zhang from China, after graduating from the Economics, Business and Social Science pathway

84% of students who completed the University of Leicester International Foundation Year in 2009 were offered a degree place at the University.
