The University of Lincoln has experienced a meteoric rise in the 2013 Guardian University Guide rankings. Lincoln is now ranked 47th in the table which is ten places higher than last year and a staggering increase of 42 places over the last three years.

Professor Mary Stuart, Vice Chancellor at the University of Lincoln said “To have reached this position is truly remarkable and a real reflection of the dedication our staff have shown in making this University such a special place to learn. I hope we can continue to build on this fantastic success in the coming years.”

Lincoln continues to rise up league tables

The University of Lincoln has gone up the ranks in this year’s Complete University Guide league table. The University sits at 53rd in the table, improving on last year’s rankings by 14 places.

Recognition for the Lincoln School of Journalism

The University of Lincoln’s School of Journalism celebrated high profile wins at two recent awards ceremonies.

Siren FM’s Managing Editor Andrew David and Deborah Wilson, Principal Lecturer in the School of Journalism, have won two Edward R Murrow awards for hard news and feature reporting.

The Edward R Murrow awards are named in honour of the celebrated American news reporter and anchor who worked for CBS for 3 decades from the 1930s.

Following the announcement, Andrew said, “This is a great honour and proves that it’s the quality of broadcasting not the size of the radio station that counts, and an award like this is a fantastic inspiration for everyone involved.”

Siren FM is Lincoln’s first community radio station and had been broadcasting since 2007. The station is based at the University of Lincoln and both students and members of the community are involved with the station.

Holly Collas and Simon McKnight won a regional Royal Television Society award for a short investigative documentary.

Holly, who along with Simon graduated last year, said they felt “very honoured to be recognised for the work that they did whilst at the University.”

They picked up the regional award for “Undergraduate Factual” at an awards ceremony in Birmingham and will now wait to see whether they will win a national award as well.

Dean of the Faculty of Media, Humanities and Performance, Professor David Sleight, was at the event to see the students receive their prize. He said: “We are really proud of all of our students, and Holly and Simon’s success is the icing on the cake this year for the School of Journalism.”

Both graduates are already in employment: Holly is news editor for a specialist magazine and Simon is working as an assistant transmission editor for ITV in the Channel Islands.

Lincoln awarded Best Street in the UK title

Lincoln’s Steep Hill has won the title of Best Street in the UK, beating off competition from Glasgow and Edinburgh. This fantastic accolade for Lincoln was announced at the Academy of Urbanism Awards on November 11th.

Michael Armstrong from the Lincoln Business Improvement Group said he was delighted that Lincoln won.

"We've got so much to offer here," he said.

"This street is so unique and here's our chance now to really maximise that opportunity, to tell everyone, to shout it from the rooftops that Lincoln's got the best street.”

Poet, Ian McMillan wrote the following to mark Lincoln’s achievement:

"Steep Hill

Halfway up or halfway down your breath begins to pull,
Your legs start to feel like you’ve been dancing for a month
Non stop.

Hold onto the handrail as you negotiate Steep Hill
And pause, take your time, gaze in the window of a café
Or a shop,

And picture people from the past or the years yet to come
Who took their time up this slope, paused and stood and looked
Or who will.

And celebrate the fact that some places simply aren’t the same
As each other. They’ve got a handrail for instance. They’re unique,
Like Steep Hill."

Lincoln graduates are more employable

More good news for students at Lincoln as our graduates employability level soared above the national average. Graduates from the University of Lincoln are proving themselves to be highly sought after even in the difficult economic climate.

A national survey by the Higher Education Funding Council for England, Destination of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) showed that nine tenths (93%) of alumni from the summer 2010 graduates were employed or in further studies by 6 months of graduating. This marks an 8% increase from last year. Furthermore, two thirds of the jobs were into a graduate role, which is also a rise up from the previous year.

This rise places Lincoln alumni in the Top 50 most employable graduates and is a testament to the continuing success of the university and its career-focussed approach to learning.

Lincoln media student attracts huge YouTube following

A third year Media Production student at the University of Lincoln has attracted a huge online following for a series of spoof University of Lincoln adverts.

Tom Ridgewell created a series of short films entitled 'banned university of Lincoln adverts' depicting a dinosaur attack on the city, a lecture theatre of fire and a zombie invasion. The clips have already been viewed over a million times in three weeks.

Despite the title of 'banned' adverts, the University are very supportive of the videos and Tom's success. Communications manager, Thirzah Wildman said "We've been watching with fascination as Tom's adverts have received attention from hundreds of thousands of people around the world. They're extremely funny and creative. But then we are used to seeing brilliance from our school of media students – many of whom have won national awards and gone on to fantastic careers."

Tom said "I just came up with the ideas in a lecture and we decided to make them. "I love Lincoln and the university, so I hope the videos make it stick in people's minds when it comes to applying for universities."

International students can follow in Tom's footsteps and join the fantastic Media Department at the University of Lincoln through the International Year One in Media Studies
