Getting to the University by air
We advise you to fly directly to Manchester International Airport (MAN), 30 miles from the University, as this is by far the easiest option.
When you apply, you can arrange a taxi transfer from Manchester airport. The taxi will take you straight to your accommodation when you arrive in the UK. See the price of airport transfers on the fees page.
Alternatively, you can get the train to Liverpool from Manchester Airport's railway station. Direct trains leave for Liverpool hourly and the journey takes about one and a half hours. You can then take a taxi from Liverpool Lime Street station to your accommodation.
If your chosen airline flies only into London, book a connecting flight to Manchester at the same time. You can also travel from London Heathrow (LHR) airport to Liverpool by train, but this can be a difficult journey with heavy luggage.
Getting around Liverpool
Transport around the city and between campuses is not a problem. Most of the University’s City and Mount Pleasant campus buildings are less than 10 minutes walk from the heart of the City Centre where there are grocery stores, chemists, clothing stores and entertainment facilities.
The free LJMU Shuttlebus Service takes LJMU students to sites across the University. In addition there are two public bus stations in the city centre and taxis are cheap and plentiful.
Getting around the UK and Europe
Liverpool has excellent transport links so it's easy to travel around the country by rail, car or coach. The mainline railway station, Liverpool Lime Street, is located right in the city centre, between the City Centre and Mount Pleasant campuses, a short walk from the ISC and your accommodation. There is also a National Express coach station and a ferry terminal.
By rail: Liverpool has good rail links to most parts of the UK. Trains to London take approximately two and a half hours on the direct service to London Euston. There is a regular service of up to six trains an hour to Manchester, which can be reached in under an hour.
By road: There are major motorway links to the M62, M57, M58 and M56 and all are within easy reach of the city centre and LJMU itself.
By air: If you want to travel further afield, Liverpool John Lennon Airport is England’s fastest growing airport and has great links with the rest of Europe at affordable prices. So, Liverpool is the perfect place for you to explore Europe on a budget while you are studying.
