Employers visiting Manhattan College's Career Fair

Your career after graduation

The education you receive at Manhattan College will give you numerous possibilities for a fulfilling and rewarding career. You will also have the opportunity to develop your career while you study. Learn about:

Optional Practical Training (OPT)

OPT provides you with an opportunity to gain actual employment experience in your chosen profession for a maximum of one year (or 29 months for some degree holders*). Its purpose is to complement your academic work. Optional practical training falls into one of the following categories:

(1) full- or part-time employment during your annual vacation
(2) part-time employment (20 hours per week or less) during the College semester
(3) full-time employment after you have completed your degree

The work must be directly related to your major field of study and it must be appropriate for someone with your level of education. You need not have a specific job offer to apply for optional practical training. The work may be full time or part time, and may occur anywhere in the United States. To be eligible to apply for optional practical training, you must have been in lawful student status for at least one academic year.

* Fields include Actuarial Science, Computer Science Applications, Engineering, Engineering Technologies, Biological and Biomedical Sciences, Mathematics and Statistics, Military Technologies, Physical Sciences, Science Technologies, Medical Scientist (MS, PhD)
