Manhattan College offers a variety of services on campus to help students achieve academic success:
International Study Center (ISC)
The Manhattan College ISC will open in Fall semester 2010 to provide the
English Transition Program. This is a rigorous English for Academic Purposes program for international students who do not yet have sufficient English language skills for degree entry but who fulfill all other admissions requirements.
The ISC provides a dynamic environment where you'll study in an international community of motivated learners, while also getting to know American classmates in your credit classes and at social events on campus.
Library
The O'Malley Library is a brand new, six-story, state-of-the-art facility. It houses over 260,000 volumes, 3,000 media items and 20,000 periodical titles in various formats.
The building is fully-wired and open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, during fall and spring semester. Comfortable reading rooms and a 24-hour internet café cater to students extended hours of study. The Library is also home to the College archives where Manhattan’s impressive history is preserved.
All books and media are listed in the online catalog, which also links to catalogs of other libraries in area.
In addition to print books and journals, Manhattan College Library subscribes to numerous resources including online journals and books and other reference materials, which are accessible to students both on and off campus. You can also obtain materials an interlibrary loan service or make on-site use of selected New York City and Westchester County libraries through a regional library network.
Computer facilities
A wide variety of computing and information services are available to Manhattan College students via JasperNet, the college's campus-wide network.
Students have access to 15 computer laboratories on campus, located in the Research and Learning Center, DeLaSalle Hall, Miguel Hall, and the Library. In total, these laboratories support 450 Intel based microcomputers running under Microsoft Windows and Red Hat Linux as well as high performance CAD/CAM workstations. Within the library/technology center, there are 40 systems in a library commons area, 30 in a 24/7 accessible lab, a 40 seat multimedia classroom and an internet café.
Wireless network access is available throughout campus including the library, all academic locations, common areas, laboratories and student residence halls.
Engineering laboratories
Manhattan College has spent over one million dollars over the past three years upgrading all its engineering facilities to cutting edge, state-of-the-art capability:
- Four civil engineering laboratories are used for undergraduate instruction in the three categories of civil engineering materials: fluids (gases and liquids); particulates (soils); and solids (concretes, metals, plastics, wood).
- Comprehensive chemical engineering laboratory facilities allow experiments in both traditional and emerging technologies, including applications such as biological reactors and membrane separation processes.
- The mechanical engineering lab uses IDEAS, the same industrial design package used by Ford and General Motors.
- A new electrical and computer engineering lab, made possible by a grant from Hewlett-Packard, is outfitted with over $140,000 of telecommunications equipment, including 25 computers.
The Writing Center
The Writing Center offers writing instruction to all members of the Manhattan College community. Assistance is available for writing assignments from any discipline. One-on-one conferencing with trained writing consultants will help you identify problems and implement solutions at any point during your writing process.
Academic support & advisory services
The College provides tutorial help in writing, mathematics and science, to increase academic confidence and develop learning skills. Individual & small group sessions are available. You can also meet with advisors who offer formal guidance and personalized, academic counseling from the time of your admission to graduation.
Research Institute
The Manhattan College School of Engineering's innovative research institute, the Center for Geotechnology (CGT), facilitates multidisciplinary, post-graduate goals in both geotechnical and geo-environmental engineering education and research.
