Undergraduate class in progress at Manhattan College

English preparation for Bachelor's degree

The undergraduate-level English Transition Program is for students whose academic qualifications meet the entry requirements of a Manhattan College Bachelor's degree, but whose level of English proficiency does not.

The Undergraduate Transition Program provides a fast and rigorous access route to regular degree classes – combining practical degree preparation with the opportunity to earn university credits as early as your first semester.

The program is divided into two phases:

Phase 1: English for Academic Purposes

Phase 1 builds on basic language abilities by increasing fluency and academic skill to intermediate level English, through a variety of core courses:

  • Listening and Speaking
  • Reading and Vocabulary
  • Writing
  • Grammar
  • Individualized Lab
  • Study Skills
  • American Culture

Your classes are always student-centered. Formats include traditional teacher-led sessions, conducting surveys outside the classroom, and interacting with the college community. Technology use in the classroom is an important aspect of the curriculum.

Phase 2: English for Academic Purposes + credit classes

Phase 2 will prepare you for academic credit class study, and improve your English to a level of academic spoken and written fluency which is High-Intermediate into Advanced.

As you continue to refine your skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing as well as other classes in a more advanced use of English language, you will also complete an academic English portfolio and give a formal capstone presentation about your studies. The capstone presentation is designed to build a varied, comprehensive look at English language pieces, including:

  • journal entries
  • novel reviews
  • organized lecture notes
  • various types of essays
  • a research paper

Credit classes

You may also enroll in one or two Manhattan College introductory degree courses, with permission of your academic advisor, while you complete your studies in the English Transition Program. These classes carry credit and count towards your degree, saving you time and tuition fees as a full-time College student.

The number of credit classes you take will depend on your language ability and academic goals. Your academic advisors will help you tailor Phase 2 to best suit your needs and prepare you for academic success.
