The ESL Transition Program provides a fast, academically focused route to regular university classes at PLU – combining practical English preparation with the opportunity to earn university credits as early as your first semester.
The program is divided into two phases:
Phase 1:
- Builds on basic language abilities by increasing fluency and academic skill for a successful passage to the more advanced use of English.
- Core classes include reading/writing/listening/speaking and grammar.
Phase 2:
- Combines English language classes with up to 3 credits of university classes to fully integrate into the PLU environment.
In the ESL Transition Program you can:
- Build study skills important to your academic success at PLU. This includes: develop research methods, exam taking tactics, time management, essay preparation, speed note taking and power-listening
- Personalize your progress through our online learning program and Guided Independent Learning projects
- Begin university credit classes as soon as you reach the equivalent of TOEFL iBT 61
- Integrate seamlessly into campus life
- Earn academic credits while improving your English proficiency
Assured Progression to PLU Admission
Enrolling into the ESL Transition Program gives you the security of knowing that you have satisfied the academic requirements for admission and have received the offer of a university place. In addition, your visa documents are issued by the university and are valid for the entire duration of your studies. You have access to the entire choice of majors at PLU.Access to PLU Facilities

Personal Monitoring and Support
Each phase of the ESL Transition Program includes the creation and completion of an Individual Learning Plan (ILP). This provides you with weekly-individualized one-on-one counselling, and progress reporting to ensure maximum success within the program.The ESL Transition Program is validated by Pacific Lutheran University and taught by specialists in English preparation. Your progress will be monitored at all times to make sure you remain on track to successfully complete the program. You will also benefit from regular assessment through examination and marked coursework.
