ESL Transition for International Students

Life on the University Campus

PLU is a close-knit community where students do much more than just go to class together. The campus is a hub of activity where anything can happen – a small group late-night study session, a concert in the student-run Cave or an impromptu mud football game.

There’s a hometown feel to the place. Everyone is in it together, in the residence hall; on athletic fields, courts and in the stands; on the stage and in the audience for performing arts; and in scores of campus clubs. And what a setting: the mountains, the woodlands and the beaches of the Great Northwest, right on the Pacific Rim!

Facilities for All your Needs

The attractive campus and its associated facilities are designed to accommodate all of your possible requirements, be they academic, social, sporting, cultural, or health related. Services include:

  • Accommodations

Your campus home

The ESL Transition program is based at the PLU International Study Center (ISC), which is well situated at the heart of the campus, in one of the most attractive buildings on site - Eastvold - a historical landmark at PLU. Built in 1952 as a chapel and music building, it originally hosted world-class artists and drama-music festivals. Today, Eastvold houses the Theatre department and main production stage, and one can often hear music floating through the hallways with the music lessons that still take place within its walls. The ISC suite of classrooms and offices are located on the second floor.

Health matters

You are encouraged to join and make use of the on-campus Health Center which provides top quality medical, dental and nursing care. Any health worries that you may have will be dealt with confidentially and efficiently. Students with special needs or disabilities are identified and, where appropriate, invited to make an appointment with one of the medical staff when they arrive, in order to discuss their needs and how these can best be met.

Major City centers

PLU is located just 15 minutes from downtown Tacoma – an area that rests beautifully on the serene Commencement Bay waterfront of Puget Sound. There you will find bars, restaurants, nightclubs and museums.  PLU is also located about an hour south of Seattle which is famous for the original Starbucks and its many other coffee house, Pike Place Market, city attractions and the sparkling blue waters of Lake Union and Elliott Bay. The city center has a lively cultural life, hosting a variety of performing and recording arts and provides dozens of galleries and museums as well as unique shopping and dining experiences.

Life beyond lectures

Students have the opportunity to make the most of a great variety of sports clubs and student societies. The campus has great sports facilities and many of the University's students are top sports achievers. There are also many events throughout the academic year to participate in from concerts to volunteer work.
