English for Academic Purposes program

Who is the program for?
English for Academic Purposes (EAP) is offered to international students - at both the undergraduate and graduate level - who want to study at Royal Roads University in Canada but who have a lower level of English.
This English preparation program is designed for students requiring one or two semesters of language and study skills instruction before they are ready to join the University Bridging Program.
Curriculum
English for Academic Purposes is a coherent degree preparation program. Students develop the four key English language skills of Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing, in the context of degree level studies. Alongside English language courses, other courses focus on the approaches and strategies required to become a successful university student in Canada.
A further and important element of the EAP program is the help given to students to adapt to living and studying within a different culture. Courses use everyday situations to enable students to become comfortable with their new environment.
While you are studying on the program, you receive one hour of formal Advising per week, in addition to your classroom time. During the Advising hour you will:
- get help with your English and academic studies
- participate in on-going orientation
- have the opportunity to lead discussions on current events
- have guest speakers from campus services
- get insight from the university's academic faculty about your degree choices
Assessment
A strong emphasis is placed on frequent assignments, a high level of formative assessment and detailed, supportive feedback. This level of assessment enables close tracking of your progress and the provision of individual guidance to maximize your English language and skills improvement.
Progression on program completion
After completion of the English for Academic Purposes program and achievement of an English language level equivalent to 4.5 IELTS, international students will progress onto the University Bridging Program.
