Pre-Master's Program: master's degree preparation


Who is the program for?

The Pre-Master's Program (PMP) is designed for students who wish to study the Master of Global Management at Royal Roads University.

Regardless of academic background, the program orients students towards 'business think' to better acclimate them to studying a management master's degree in Canada. The PMP focuses on critical thinking and team skills, and is appropriate for:

  • international students who need to improve their English language and gain Canadian graduate-level study skills 
  • domestic (Canadian) students who have a non-business undergraduate degree

All students need to have attained the academic grades required for graduate study at Royal Roads University in Canada.

Curriculum

Most international students will need to take both the Academic and English parts of the program - a total of 30 hours of classes per week. Domestic students are only required to take the Academic courses.

Academic courses 

Critical Thinking Skills
Build critical thinking, problem solving, and written communication skills. Define the criteria for effective critical thinking, which form the framework for evaluation of critical thinking throughout the course. Create effective academic arguments using logic supported by evidence and opinion, and grounded in relevant research. Solve problems by applying the principles of academic argument and critical thinking to construct a case study analysis. Use effective written communication to present an analysis clearly, coherently, and correctly.

Context for Business
Responsible managers must comprehend and respond to the constantly changing social, economic, political and environmental context of an organization, as well as manage interactions with key external stakeholders, such as government and the media. This course examines the contributions that Social Sciences - sociology, psychology, anthropology, political science, history - have made to the understanding of how individuals and organizations interact and behave in society. Discover the place and role of management within the context of the greater Social Sciences, and the value of the Social Sciences in understanding business situations. 
(5 hours per week)

Accounting 
An introduction to the "language of business" by way of accounting principles. Discuss generally accepted Canadian accounting methods. Investigate techniques of accumulating and reporting financial data, as well as formulas to evaluate the economic health of a company. Focus on financial systems rather than on diagnostic evaluation. Accounting is a subject best learned best by doing - you are provided multiple opportunities to practice the concepts.

English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

The aim is to build the English language and study skills necessary for success in graduate and professional environments. The course orientates international students into the educational system of university in Canada. Students develop the four key English language skills of Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing, in the context of master's level studies. On completion of the program, you will have achieved the equivalent of 6.5 IELTS English language proficiency.
(15 hours per week)

Teaching and assessment

Teaching on the Pre-Master's Program resembles typical master's-level study at university in Canada. Instruction during the program and measurable student work outcomes include:

  • Peer-reviewed content and readings and subsequent class discussions
  • Individual and group formal presentations
  • Collaborative and team projects
  • Use of technology both for teaching and in the production of assignments

Progression on program completion

After successful completion of the Pre-Master's Program, students progress to the Master of Global Management.
