Specialist preparation for postgraduate study at the University of Stirling for international students

Our Pre-Masters Programme is a tailor made programme for international students consisting of academic subjects, study skills and English language training. On successful completion of the course students progress directly on to their chosen Masters degree at the University.

Direct progression to a Masters degree

Joining the Pre-Masters Programme gurantees a conditional offer of a place on a postgraduate programme at the University of Stirling, selected by the student from the list under the degree progressions tab below. On successful completion of the programme students proceed directly on to their chosen programme.  

English for Pre-Masters

If you do not have an English language level of IELTS 5.5 or equivalent as required for the Pre-Masters Programme, you can add one or two terms of English for Pre-Masters (EPM) to your study programme.

 If you have an IELTS 4.5 you will need to study the Pre-Masters Programme + 1 term EPM beginning in September or January.

If you have an IELTS 4.0 you will need to study the Pre-Masters Programme + 2 terms EPM beginning in September or June.

Entry requirements

  • English language:
    IELTS 5.5
    TOEFL internet based test: Listening 21, Reading 22, Speaking 23, Writing 21
    Pearson Test of English: 51 (across all skills)
  • Students with an English level below IELTS 5.5 can first study one or two terms of English for Pre-Masters.
  • Academic: One or more of the following:
    - recognised higher/advanced diploma in a related subject area
    - recognised degree in related field (eg Business Studies)
    - Honours degree in any subject (eg BA International Relations) (see table below)
    - You must have previously studied Maths or a numerate subject to study the Pre-Masters Programme.
  • Nationality: The International Foundation year is only available to "overseas" students, non-UK and non-EU
  • Age: Students are normally at least 20 years old

Course content

The Pre-Masters Programme consists of a range of academic modules covering of Business, Management, Economics and Finance as well as English Skills. There are 8 credit-bearing subject modules for the Pre-Masters Programme.

Term 1:

Pre-Masters Skills for English 1 - Develops your English level and consolidates a range of wider academic skills such as critical thinking, writing a bibliography, preparation and delivery of presentation and the development of communication and group working skills.

You may choose one or both of the following modules:

Quantitative Methods in Business - Demonstrate and develop your numeracy skills and learn to utilise mathematical methods and techniques to inform the decision-making of managers.
AND/OR
Finance and Investment - Strengthen your understanding of the role played by finance and investment in the operation and strategic direction of the firm. An in-depth analysis of the different types of business organisations, of risk and return and of the Capital Asset Pricing Model.

Economics - Strengthens your knowledge and understanding of economic theories and systems and equips you to examine information relevant to economics topics, problems and issues. Among the topics studied are economic models, the concept of allocative efficiency and the role of government.

Business and Management 1 (Theory of Management) - Gain greater insight into the role played by sociology, psychology and economics in the development of the business and management subject matter. Deploy your critical skills in the analysis of management styles and business related models, learn how to gather and interpret business related data and study the differences between qualitative and quantitative data collection.

Term 2:

Pre-Masters Skills for English 2 (PSE 2) - On completion of this module you should will have developed further your research, referencing and presentation skills and had the opportunity to work on the reading of longer and more complex academic texts and the writing of factual and discursive essays on academic topics.

Business and Management 2 (Business Environment) - Develop your understanding of key models and concepts in the field of strategy. Build on your work in earlier modules to consider topics such as resource and capability analysis, competitive advantage and corporate, global and diversification strategies. This module is assessed through a case study based on a FTSE100 company and so allows you to develop your skills as an independent learner, researching a range of materials and deploying techniques of critical analysis.

Business and Management 3 (Operations Management) - Develop further your understanding of the key concepts of organisational behaviour, including management and leadership styles and the analysis of different cultural models. Operations management sessions focus on supply chain management and inventory planning.

Business and Management 4 (Case Study) - Using the knowledge, understanding and techniques learned in earlier modules, together with the guidance and support of your tutor, you will identify a FTSE 100 company on which to base a 4,000-word case study. Your tutor will help develop your independent learning skills by advising you on how to develop materials and use models and concepts to apply critical analysis techniques.
