The historic city of Stirling in Scotland

An Historic City

Stirling has a long and colourful history, and many impressive remnants of the city's past are still standing, including the magnificent Stirling Castle. Stirling's location gave it a central role in Scotland's once turbulent history: the city was, for many centuries, a royal residence, saw kings and queens crowned in its principal church and hosted the Scottish Parliament. Many 16th and 17th century buildings have been preserved in the area just below the castle and are still in use today as homes, tourist sites and places for entertainment. The city has a Victorian and Edwardian centre with rail and bus terminals and extensive modern shopping and restaurant facilities.

The Social Scene

  • Stirling city has a thriving centre and a warm community feel
  • Shopping, café culture, nightlife
  • Students make up over 20 percent of Stirling's population and this is reflected in the city's pubs, bars and clubs. There is a range of venues geared towards students and Thursday night is student night.

Stirling is especially fortunate in having so much of Scotland's best scenery within easy reach. From walking to canoeing, mountain biking to sailing, Scotland has everything for the outdoor enthusiast.

The Scottish weather is varied, but the climate is usually temperate – there are very few extremes. In summer, the average temperature is 18-22°C; in autumn 8-11°C; in winter 0-10°C and in spring 4-10°C.
