Four Seasons Hotel Hampshire provides fantastic opportunity for Hao Wang to improve her employment prospects

Hedy on placement at the Four Seasons Hotel

Hao Wang (Hedy) completed her Foundation Year at the Surrey ISC in 2008 and has gone on to study BSc International Hospitality Management at the University of Surrey. Hedy has opted to spend her third year in industry to put her knowledge in to practice and to improve her employment prospects.

Hedy was helped to find her placement by the professional training team at Surrey who offer continuous support to students throughout the year, visiting them on site twice wherever they are in the world.

Hedy comments: ‘’At the beginning of year 2, there is a weekly one hour seminar called professional training orientation, which focuses on C.V. writing and interview skills. We are also introduced to useful information like the legal issues to work in the UK; employer company profiles; average salary for the various roles; application and vacancy details and what the employers would expect of the successful candidate in these advertised positions. If an application is successful, every student will be assigned a dedicated placement tutor who will go through the contract with students to ensure everything is right and legal and the offered salary is at the acceptable level.

I believe doing my placement year in an international company like the Four Seasons Hotel opens up worldwide opportunities for me in the future. It has also given me the chance to work in a different area (i.e. housekeeping) and see first-hand operations in a world-renowned hotel. I am really enjoying my time and I am also learning a lot from my everyday duties as well as from the hotel group’s excellent training schemes.’’

Surrey is recognised for the quality of its Hospitality and Tourism degrees, currently ranked 1st in the UK (Times Good University Guide 2012).

Tuesday 7th February 2012

An International Study Centre student is currently doing an internship year at world renowned electronics company Motorola Solutions.

Salim Ramjean outside Motorola where he undertook his work placementSalim Ramjean from Mauritius, who started on the Engineering, Science and Mathematics International Foundation Year at the University of Surrey International Study Centre in 2008, is now spending the third year of his BEng in Electronic Engineering on a work placement with top firm Motorola Solutions.

"I am currently doing a placement year to gain work experience to complement my degree. When it came to applying and interviews, my department was very supportive as well as the careers office in terms of providing useful interview hints, preparation questions and helpful information. My placement is providing me with the skills and especially the work experience which employers mostly look for in fresh graduates. I have definitely gained a lot of knowledge so far and will continue to challenge myself further. This opportunity also plays a major role in preparing me for my final year project and choice of modules.

Once I have completed my degree I hope to perhaps complete a Masters degree, or probably start working, if the company I’m currently on placement with offers me a permanent role once I finish my degree."

Con-GRAD-ulations ISC Class of 2011!

Friday 18th November 2011

The Surrey ISC Class of 2010/11 attended their very own graduation ceremony on Thursday 3rd November at the University of Surrey campus in Guildford.

122 students successfully graduated from the International Study Centre this summer. The graduation was a chance for students to reflect on their achievements now that they have started their degrees, and also to catch up with their ISC classmates and teachers at a buffet after the ceremony.

Head of Centre Dr Simon Cleary in addressing the students at the ceremony said “In the beginning, some of you may have felt it was too much change, and yet none of you gave up, you kept going, you kept trying and you managed to cope. As you progressed, you learnt more about yourselves and about how much you can do, you started to become responsible and independen. This has allowed you to carry on developing as you now know that you can achieve things, and you are able to succeed, and for this, I applaud you.”

Muhammad Ali Saikh, a student from Pakistan, in giving a speech to his fellow students said: “My time here at the ISC was undoubtedly one of the best chapters of my life. When I came here, I was 6000 miles away from home, living alone for the first time, lonely, homesick and cold. Things started changing, as soon as I started making friends. The friends I made at the ISC, are my best friends now. Because of how close we have grown, they are now like brothers to me.” He went on to say that: “Overall, on a serious note, the ISC was more of an experience, a rollercoaster ride, in which when it ended we were all geared up and ready for the university.”

We wish all the ISC graduates the very best of luck in their degrees at the University of Surrey!
