Entry requirements

Below are all the requirements for admission to the Pre-Masters programme at the University of Sussex International Study Centre. If you have any question this information doesn't answer, please contact us.

  • Nationality: the Pre-Masters programme is only available to overseas students, non-UK and non-EU.
  • Age: students are normally at least 20 years old
  • English language: For direct entry to the Pre-Masters: IELTS 6.0, TOEFL 547 (210 computer based test, 78 internet based test), Pearson Test of English 48-52. If your English is below IELTS 6.0, we can offer 1-2 terms of English for Pre-Masters before you start your Pre-Masters programme.
  • Academic: One or more of the following: recognised higher/advanced diploma in a related subject area; recognised degree in related field (eg Business Studies); Honours degree in any subject (eg BA International Relations). See the table below for country-specific information.

Programme content

You will study 8 modules.

Core modules

These modules are shared with all other Pre-Masters routes and are aimed at strengthening your English and study skills.

English and Skills for University Study 1 and 2

Over these two modules you will develop your English communication skills and learn a range of study skills, including: writing and reading strategies; presentation and seminar participation; organisation of time and materials, meeting deadlines and responding to feedback.

On completion, you will be able to use English language in your own academic work, give well structured presentations, confidently answer follow-up questions and contribute to seminar discussions; take notes from readings and lectures; plan, develop and write well structured academic essays; be confident in self-directed learning strategies.

Route modules

The following modules will provide you with the subject-specific knowledge for your Masters degree.

Introduction to Comparative Law

You will explore different legal systems in their political, social, economic and cultural context, which has an increasing significance in an age of internationalism and globalisation.

Introduction to English Law and Legal System

You will develop a basic grounding in the institutions, procedures, methodology and traditions of the English law and legal system. You will study how the law is made and applied and the constitutional context in which it operates.

Introduction to International Law

Law at Sussex has a strong internationalist outlook, with an emphasis on research and the practical significance of study. This module will provide a good introduction to studies in international law.

Introduction to Law Studies

You will start by addressing the basic principles of legal methods, legal argument and concepts and will be encouraged to develop skills in legal argument both in writing and orally.

This module introduces you to a variety of legal material including law textbooks, journal articles, statutes and case law and encourages you to use these in your research and argument.

Issues in Law and Legal Studies

This module provides the opportunity for you to engage with important legal issues of contemporary concern.

Research Project

You will develop the ability to write a substantive piece of academic work displaying applied understanding of subject matter and an ability to critically analyse materials and concepts.
