Preparing for Masters study at Sussex

If you do not meet the direct entry requirements for a Masters degree or you simply want to refresh your knowledge, the Pre-Masters course is for you.

Specialist preparation in two terms

The Pre-Masters is a programme of academic subjects, study skills and English language training. It is designed specifically for international students and will qualify you to meet the challenges of a taught Masters at the University.

You can study on the Pre-Masters if you can demonstrate a level of English of IELTS 6.0 or equivalent.

If your English level is lower than IELTS 6.0, you can still apply for a Pre-Masters programme and we offer English for Pre-Masters (EPM) courses:

  • One term of EPM if your IELTS is 5.0
  • Two terms of EPM if your IELTS is 4.0 

Assured progression to your degree

Joining the Pre-Masters programme guarantees you a conditional offer of a place on a Masters degree at the University. Once you have successfully completed the course, you will proceed directly to your preferred Masters.

Depending on the degree you intend to study, you can choose between five different routes:

Personal monitoring and support

The Pre-Masters is validated by the University of Sussex and taught by specialists in university preparation. Your progress will be monitored at all times to make sure you remain on track to successfully complete the programme.

Flexible entry

You can begin the Pre-Masters either in January or April.

If you need one term of English for Pre-Masters before the programme, you can start in September or January.

If you need two terms of English for Pre-Masters, you can start in June or September.
