English language requirements and additional tuition

The International Study Centre at Sussex offers additional English language tuition if you don't meet the requirements of

• IELTS 5.0 (or equivalent) - for the International Foundation Year programme
• IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent) - for the Diploma in Business and Management
• IELTS 5.0 (or equivalent) - for the three-term Pre-Masters 

If you don’t have a current IELTS grade, you may still apply to the ISC as we accept a list of other recognised test providers and we can also assess your English through our own bespoke test.

Please note there is no option to have additional English language training before the two-term Pre-Masters programme as students who do not have the required IELTS 6.0 will be advised to take the three-term Pre-Masters programme instead.

English Language Preparation (ELP) programme

This intensive course is designed to improve your English language skills up to the required level of IELTS 5.0.

It normally consists of one or two terms of study with 25 hours per week of tuition plus 10 hourse per week of self-study.

The grid below shows the length of study required at the ISC in preparation for a degree, according to your English Language level. Please note that undergraduate degrees start in September and masters programmes start in October.
