The International Year 1 Diploma is a three-term programme which provides direct access to the second year of an undergraduate degree in Media and Film Studies.

It is carefully designed to help you develop your academic knowledge and improve your English language skills over the three terms.
Your academic performance will 'accelerate' over the three terms of study.

Entry requirements

Below you will find all requirements for admission to the International Year 1. If you have any doubts about whether you meet these requirements, please contact us.

  • Nationality: the International Year 1 is only available to "overseas" students, non-UK and non-EU.
  • Age: students need to be 17 when they start on the programme.
  • English language: IELTS 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.5 in writing), TOEFL 183 (computer-based test), Pearson Test of English (PTE) 51 (across all skills). Students with a level of English below IELTS 5.5 can take 1-2 terms of an intensive English Language Preparation programme at the ISC before starting on the International Year One.
  • Academic qualification: Good High school graduation grades or equivalent plus up to one year of further study. See country-specific qualifications in the table below:

India Standard 10+2 with 65% or above plus study of College/Polytechinc Diplomas
Indonesia High School certificate (SMA/SMU) with grade 7 plus evidence of further study
Iran Either 2 years Kardani/Associate Degree at tertiary level; OR 1 year of study towards Associate Degree with grades over 15/20 and/or significant work experience at management level.
Japan High School/Upper Secondary School leaving certificate plus evidence of further study.
Jordan Successful completion of Tawjihi with average of 80% plus evidence of further study.
Kazakhstan Certificate of Secondary Education with grade 5 across all subjects plus evidence of further study.
Korea Successful completion of High School Diploma with grade average of 4 with at least 4th grade in relevant/prerequisite subjects.
Libya Successful completion Secondary Education Certificate with average of 80% or above plus evidence of further study post completion of secondary school
Macau Cambridge Overseas Higher School Cert A-E (COHSC), part study of Diploma, Higher Diploma or Associate degree.
Mexico Bachillerato 90% or 75% + 1 year HE (pass)
Nigeria Successful completion of West African School Certificate (WAEC) or Senior School Certificate with C6. Plus evidence further study
Pakistan Successful completion of High Secondary Certificate with passes in 4 or more subjects with an average of 60% plus completion of 1st year of degree / diploma level studies or High Secondary Certificate of 75% or above.
Qatar Successful completion of Thanawaya Aam Qatari with average grade 80% plus evidence of further study
Russia Attestat with minimum GPA 4.0 plus successful completion of 1 further year
Saudi Arabia Part study of diploma level studies - Diploma provided by Higher Institutes and Technical Colleges / Technical College Certificate / Higher Technical Institute Diploma / College of Technology Diploma / Higher Diploma
Taiwan Successful completion of Senior High 3 at an average of 70% or above plus evidence of further study
Thailand Successful completion Mathayom 6 with GPA 2.0 plus evidence of further study
Turkey Successful completion of Deviet Lisen Bitirme Diplomasi or High School year 3 with average grade 4
UAE Successful completion of Tawjihi with average of 80% plus evidence of further study
Ukraine Successful completion of ATTESTAT/Certificate of Secondary Education with grade average of 9
Vietnam Completed Year 12 plus further study (university, college, standard foundation)

Below is the list of degrees you will be able to access on completion of the International Year 1 Diploma in Media and Film Studies. Next to each degree we provide the final grades you will need to achieve at the end of each term in order to progress on to that degree.

Programme content

You will study the following compulsory modules:

English and Skills for University Study 1, 2 and 3

Over these three modules, you will develop your English communication skills and learn a range of study skills, including writing and reading strategies, presentation and seminar participation, organisation of time and materials, meeting deadlines and responding to feedback.

When you have completed these modules, you will be able to take notes and write essays in English. You should also have the confidence to give presentations, answer follow-up questions and contribute to seminar discussions.

Learning Skills – Critical Thinking and Communication

You will develop reflective thinking skills, improve your critical analysis and construct and communicate arguments more effectively both verbally and in writing.

Learning Skills – Information Technology

This course aims to provide you with a practical introduction to IT skills and how they are used in an academic and learning context.

Learning Skills – Research Skills

You will explore the main sources of academic information and the main research methods useful for identifying and gathering that information.

Media and Interpretation 1

You will explore the key concepts and critical approaches that inform studies of media production and consumption.

Media and Interpretation 2

You will examine the key concepts underpinning ideology and representations in the media and consider the notion of mediation through the analysis of stereotypes and gender representations.

Principles of Film and TV 1

You will explore key theoretical frameworks and develop a critical vocabulary for the study of film and television. You will gain a critical understanding of the relationship between film producer, film star and audience.

Principles of Film and TV 2

You will be introduced to audience theory and will correlate its development with media literacy and technology.

You will also take two out of the following elective modules. These will be run depending on student numbers and intended degree progression.

You take either:

Media Practice: Digital Media

You will develop a basic understanding and awareness of digital media technologies, information design, layout and composition and the presentation of a body of work in a digital environment. The module will introduce you to many of the technical skills required to progress through the degree.

And:

Media Practice: Video

You develop a basic understanding and awareness of visual media and conveying meaning and emotion through the moving image. The module will introduce you to many of the technical skills required to progress through the degree.

Or:

Milestones in Media History 1: Hollywood in Context

(elective for the BA in Film Studies and the BA in Media Studies) The aim of this module is to give you an understanding of the role of Hollywood cinema within the political and social life of the United States. You will have the opportunity to view a range of representative Hollywood films and discuss them critically in relation to the industry and its practices.
