Arriving in the UK
- You should plan to arrive in the UK on Saturday 27th or Sunday 28th of September.
- Remember to take your University of Sussex documentation showing that you have been accepted on to the course with you on the plane.
- If you have booked a taxi transfer with us, you will be met as you go through arrivals. The driver will hold a sign with your name on it.
- The taxi will then take you to the University of Sussex campus. The taxi driver will know the accommodation block you will be staying in, but it is a good idea for you to have the details of where you are staying easily to hand.
- If you arrive at the airport and no-one is there to meet you, please call this emergency telephone number: 07824 370181
Arriving at Sussex
- Make sure that you have a copy of your enrolment documents with you when you arrive at the campus.
- If you arrive at the weekend or outside of the Accommodation Office hours (see 2) you will be taken to York House where you can pick up your tenancy agreement to take with you to your accommodation.
- If you arrive on campus between 9.30am and 4.30pm on any weekday the taxi will take you directly to your allocated accommodation. Please report to the reception where you will be given your keys, and welcome information.
- The porter will make sure that you have your key, room inventory and welcome information.
Arriving at your accommodation In your room you will find a towel and a bedding pack including sheets, a duvet, a duvet cover, pillow and pillow case. Once in your room, complete your room inventory, sign it and give it back to the porter.
If you have not met your Residential Adviser then try to find out who they are. The Residential Advisers are students who are there to help you settle. They will not only help you with finding out about the local facilities, but also provide ‘getting to know you’ evening outings.
If you arrive during term time, the ISC office is open between 8.45am and 5pm each weekday. Once you have settled in to your accommodation, please come along to the Mantell Building during these times to meet the ISC Programme Manager.
Induction programme Students arriving after the first day of term will be given a short induction by our ISC staff. We will also provide you with key information relating to the following areas:
• Opening a bank account • Doctors and dentists • Identification cards for students
...as well as many other 'things to know' that will help you during your stay on campus.

Opening a bank account If you are coming to the UK for at least an academic year, it is recommended that you open a bank account. The University campus has two banks: Barclays and HSBC. There are many other banks based in Brighton. Lloyds TSB and NatWest are the other main banks.
It is very useful to start a bank account with HSBC or Barclays in your own country if that is possible. Before opening an account, check whether money can be transferred into it from outside of the UK. To open a UK bank account you will need a letter from the ISC to the bank confirming that you are a full time student.
DO NOT carry large amounts of cash or keep large amounts of cash in your accommodation.
Police registration If, on entering the UK, your visa is stamped with the words ‘Register with UK police on arrival’ this must be done shortly after arrival. Staff at the ISC will help you with this. You will have the opportunity to register with the police during your first month at the University. You will need your passport, two passport-sized photos, your ISC Certificate of Enrolment and a sum of money, currently £34. You will be given further information on registering with the police during induction.
University Health Centre The University Health Centre is located next to Lancaster House. General medical care is provided by four doctors and their staff. Students living on campus can register with the Health Centre and then see the doctor or nurse by making an appointment.
Dentist There is a dental surgery located in the Health Centre building. Surgery hours are from 9.30am – 5.00pm Monday to Thursday and from 9.30am – 4.00pm on Friday.
Pharmacy There is a pharmacist on campus located next to the Health Centre who will dispense medicines on prescription.
