Career Development and Employment Centre
Once you have completed your Foundation or Pre-Masters course, as a full time undergraduate or postgraduate degree student, you will have access to Sussex's comprehensive career development service. You can also use the services up to one year following graduation.
The Career Development and Employment Centre (CDEC) can help you to identify specific career aims and to develop the career-planning strategies you will need to achieve them. CDEC offers a wide range of resources and events to help you plan your future career:
Information
- Information Centre - reference and take away literature on career options, employers, postgraduate study and funding, work and study overseas, vacation work etc
- CDEC website - links to relevant careers sites including companies, vacancy sites, postgraduate study and training, on-line guidance and international information
- CDEC online newsletter
- Career Guides - to assist career research, identify entry requirements, typical employers and related occupations
Guidance
- Drop-in short interviews (20 mins) with a professionally qualified Careers Adviser - show your CV or job application to a careers adviser for personalised feedback
- One-to-one longer careers consultations (up to one hour)
- Mock interviews to practise your technique before an interview.
Finding a Job
CDEC does not place people in jobs, students apply for advertised positions directly.
- Advice on finding work as an international student: CDEC staff can check your visa to make sure you are eligible to work
- Wide range of job vacancies – graduate, finalist, part time, vacation - mostly in Brighton or the local area
- A range of positions within the University e.g. administrative posts often targeted specifically at postgraduates
- Voluntary and work experience opportunities
- Free employer directories with graduate and internship positions
- Up-to-date information on income tax and national insurance contributions

- Skills workshops – employer-led sessions covering all aspects of the application process from CVs to interviews to presentation skills
