Prepare for undergraduate study with the International Foundation Year

Undergraduate preparation at Trinity College Dublin

The International Foundation Year is a three-term programme, specially designed for international students who do not meet the requirements for direct entry to an undergraduate degree programme. Each programme combines study skills, English language training and academic study to prepare you for degree-level study.

Study structure

You can choose from two routes:

All foundation routes are modular. You will study four core subject modules and six subject-specific modules designed to focus on the academic areas most useful for your degree.

Assessment

You will be assessed regularly throughout the IFY to make sure you achieve the standard required for progression onto your chosen degree programme. Your development is monitored throughout the year. You will also be required to complete a series of presentations and long essays as part of your overall assessment.

Flexible entry

You can begin the International Foundation Year in either September or January for degree entry the following September.

Progression to your degree

Once you have completed the programme and achieved the required grades, you will progress to your chosen degree. Undergraduate degrees at Trinity are four-year programmes. The first year (and sometimes the second year) is often a common first year which offers a range of modules to choose from. Students can then choose to specialise in the remaining years of their degree. The benefit of a four year degree is that it will give you a depth and breadth of knowledge in your particular field.
