Location

Bristol combines the tradition of a historic port city with the atmosphere of a fast-paced, dynamic and modern metropolis. Considered to be the capital of the South West of England, the city has a diverse, vibrant cultural life and buzzing social scene.

Most of our university buildings are in the heart of this creative, multicultural city. A short stroll from the University precinct down Park Street, with its stylish shops, will take you to Bristol’s beautiful harbourside. The redeveloped quayside is alive with artistic and cultural activity numerous attractions, including an aquarium, theatres, concert halls, comedy clubs, museums and galleries. Walk the other way from the University precinct and you will soon end up on The Downs, 400 acres of publicly owned grassland extending to the dramatic Avon Gorge, with spectacular views from Brunel’s world-famous Clifton Suspension Bridge. The University’s academic schools, student residences and shopping and leisure facilities are all within easy walking distance of each other.

Academic Focus

Our students come from all over the world and from all parts of society, which ensures a diverse and interesting community. We believe that anyone with great potential will thrive at the University. Our emphasis is on a research-informed curriculum and we use a variety of methods, including face-to-face teaching and e-learning resources, to support student centred learning.

Studying at Bristol means you will be introduced to exciting research developments and will experience the process of research by undertaking a project of your own. Learning is supported by staff who are experts in their subject. One of the ways the University supports research, teaching and learning is through investment in its buildings and facilities. The University has recently invested over £4 million in refurbishing its libraries, which provide access to thousands of electronic books, journals and databases and 1.4 million volumes of printed material  – the largest academic collection in the south west of England.  The University is continuing to invest in new teaching and research facilities, and is currently building a new Life Sciences building – other facilities are continually being refurbished to ensure Bristol remains at the cutting edge. The University has developed an online learning environment and University portal - these tools give you access to the University from anywhere in the World.
