Life on campus at Newport

The city of Newport at night

Location of the University

Newport is a great location and easy to get to from most places in the UK. Based at the gateway to Wales, in the south of the country, you will be only two hours from London and half an hour from Bristol or Cardiff. See a map of the UK showing the location of Newport.

Newport

ISC students are based at the University of Wales, Newport, 4 miles outside the city centre. The campus is in the beauiful picturesque Caerleon village.

Newport in history

Newport has contributed its fair share to the history of Wales – the legacy of the Roman invasion 2,000 years ago, becoming one of the major ports during the Industrial Revolution, the famous Chartists march on Newport to win the vote and other democratic rights that we now take for granted. More recently, the discovery of the remains of a medieval ship dating back to the 1550’s has put Newport even further on the archaeological map.

Newport today

Vibrant and forward-thinking, Newport today caters for everything that the student lifestyle could wish for – shopping, entertainment, sporting facilities, cinemas, restaurants and a thriving music scene - around 14 clubs in the city offer music whatever your preferences. With a population of 140,000, it’s the third largest city in Wales and has a multi-cultural community.

The Newport International Sports Village offers facilities including the Wales National Velodrome and recently opened swimming pool. If you prefer outdoor pursuits then there are plenty of opportunities including rock climbing and mountain biking.

The future of Newport

Newport is growing and improving at an ever increasing rate and has seen major investments in recent years. The city is currently undergoing major regeneration worth approximately £2 billion.

Cardiff

Cardiff, the capital city of Wales, is only a 12 minute train journey from Newport. Cardiff is thriving city with a growing national and international reputation. It combines a friendly and inexpensive location with all the culture and entertainments of a progressive modern capital.

The city is well known for the impressive Portland stone buildings, parks and tree lined avenues that form Cardiff’s magnificent Civic Centre. It has a wide variety of culture from the historical Castle to the ultra-modern Wales Millennium Centre a major venue for top-flight international sport and world class music acts. For shopping, you will find not only the big named chain stores but unusual shops in the Arcades.

Although, everyone speaks English, both Welsh and English are the official languages and therefore, public signs and documents appear in both languages.

From its Celtic origins to the present day, the people of Wales have a strong sense of identity. Wales is renowned for its choirs, poets, artists and performers, and also has a reputation for sporting activities, particularly rugby and soccer - which the Welsh relish with a passion.
