Sport and leisure at NewportAt Newport, students participate in a wide range of sporting activities as well as taking advantage of the many local outdoor pursuits. The Students' Union offers regular entertainment and student activities.Sports TeamsA number of the sports teams at Newport compete in the British Universities Sports Association (BUSA) tournaments, including men's rugby, women's rugby, men's football, women's football, basketball, cricket and netball. Sports FacilitiesThe University Sports Centre provides students with a full range of sporting, fitness and leisure experiences - catering from the total beginner through to the international athlete. The University sports complex is outstanding as the University supports the Elite Sports Programme. Sports Hall: the impressive 37m x 27m sports hall with a gransprung floor hosts badminton, volleyball, basketball, netball, cricket, hockey, 5-a-side football, trampolining, gymnastics and short tennis. Gym / Fitness Suite: health and fitness classes throughout the week, including martial arts, aerobics, yoga, boxercise, circuits and step. The modern fitness suite boasts over 40 pieces of cardiovascular, weights resistance and free weights equipment. A state-of-the-art Human Performance Laboratory also offers fitness testing and sports science support. There is also a fully qualified sports masseur. Outdoor Pitches & Courts: one rugby pitch and two floodlit tennis and netball courts. Tennis Academy: runs throughout the year and is a great opportunity to receive quality coaching and improve your game. Adrenalin Sports: the University is within easy reach are facilities for sailing and windsurfing, dry-slope skiing, caving, canoeing, mountain biking, rock climbing, orienteering and hill walking. Elite Sports Squad: provides sports science, social and academic support for student-athletes competing at regional, national or international standard in any sport, irrespective of course of study. It is an initiative to support and develop excellence and to enable its members to balance their roles of student and athlete effectively.
Students' UnionAs a WISC student you will also have automatic membership of the Students’ Union which runs a dynamic and comprehensive range of student activities, and offers many clubs and societies to join. Entertainment is a key part of the Students' Union's activities. The Freshers fortnight is two weeks of events designed to give all freshers the ideal start to their University lives. Seasonal balls provide entertainment on a large scale throughout the year, including the Halloween Freak Fest, the Snow Ball at Christmas, and in February the annual Valentines Dance. In May the prestigious May Ball is an eagerly awaited event that always attracts a large number of students and some of Britain's finest live acts. Regular comedy nights, quizzes, specialist dance evenings and Radio Noize - your very own student radio station at Newport - all contribute to the entertainment package that the Students' Union offers. Entertainment venuesClarence Bar: The Students' Union's recently refurbished Clarence Bar reflects the up and coming cosmopolitan city of Newport. The Clarence is a venue for live music, quizzes and lively sporting events including Premier League games, international football, and Six Nations rugby on our plasma screens. Main Venue: home to most of the Students' Union major events including the seasonal Balls, comedy nights and bands. |
