Structure of Degrees in America

Undergraduate degrees

Undergraduate degrees at Woodbury University and across America are taught over four years and earn you one of the following bachelor degrees depending upon the area you choose to study:

  • Bachelor of Architecture
  • Bachelor of Arts
  • Bachelor of Fine Arts
  • Bachelor of Science

Freshman Year

In your first year, as a freshman, the focus is on:

  • Introductory courses giving a solid grounding in a wide range of subjects.
  • There is usually a required core curriculum which may include mathematics, science, English, history, logic and philosophy, but which also allows you to choose electives in subjects that interest you.
  • This is also your chance to take introductory courses in what you hope will become your main discipline of study (known as your major). For example, you might take Economics as a freshman if you wish to study a Business major.

Sophomore Year

In your second year or sophomore year, you will:

  • Complete the core curriculum and advance in some subjects to the next tier.
  • Those students who have decided on a major may begin taking prerequisite classes at this time (however, you are not required to formally declare a major until your junior year).

Junior Year

In the third year, as a junior, you will:

  • Have declared a major by now.
  • Begin the advanced coursework for your major.

Senior Year

In your fourth year as a senior, you will:

  • Take your last exams.
  • Complete your final classes required in your Bachelor's degree.

Work placement

All undergraduate students at Woodbury are required to take an internship, a period of time working in a business. For most subject areas, this will be for 120 hours of work. Seminars and information sessions at the Careers and Alumni Office will help you prepare
for the world of work, and secure a useful placement.

Graduate degrees

Most Master's programs can be completed in 1 to 2 years, depending on the number of credits required. Woodbury graduate degree programs are between 30 and 70 credits. Full-time students usually take 9 credit hours of graduate course work each semester.

To complete a Master's degree you will be required to submit a thesis, dissertation or research project.
