About the ESL Transition Program

The on-campus ESL Transition Program, delivered at the International Study Center (ISC), provides a fast and academically focused route to a Bachelor's or Master's degree at Woodbury University. It combines practical English preparation with study skills and cultural assimilation.

Undergraduate ESL Transition Program

The undergraduate program is divided into two phases:

Phase 1:

  • Builds on basic language abilities by increasing fluency and academic skill
  • Core classes include reading/writing/listening/speaking and grammar
  • Integrated study skill-building
  • Engaging electives for maximum motivation

Phase 2:

  • Language classes developing a more advanced use of English
  • Up to 3 credits of university classes
  • Creation of a Writing Portfolio
  • Full language and cultural integration into the University environment

In the Undergraduate ESL Transition Program you can:

    • Build study skills important to your academic success, including research methods, exam taking tactics, time management, essay preparation, speed note taking and power-listening
    • Personalize your progress through a Guided Independent Learning project
    • Begin academic credit classes as soon as you reach our equivalent of TOEFL iBT 61
    • Integrate seamlessly into Southern Californian campus life
    • Earn University credits while improving your English proficiency

        Graduate ESL Transition Program

Woodbury offers a Master's-level ESL Transition Program for students whose academic qualifications have gained them entry into a Woodbury University graduate program, but whose English level is not yet proficient.

Following the same core content format as the Undergraduate ESL Transition Program, the Pre-Master's Course elective classes will concentrate on the specific English language and study skills you need at a Master's level.

Assured progression to a Woodbury degree program

Enrolling into the ESL Transition Program gives you the security of knowing that you have satisfied the academic requirements for admission and have received the offer of a university place. In addition, your I-20 form is issued by the university and is valid for the entire duration of your studies. You have access to many degrees and majors at Woodbury University.

        Reduced fees

If you are accepted into the International Study Center, you will be eligible for a Study Group International student tuition discount throughout your transition and undergraduate or graduate program.

        Integrate into campus life

You will be fully enrolled at Woodbury University and can enjoy all the advantages of living on campus. A comprehensive range of academic facilities are available to you, as well as extracurricular activities which allow you to get to know your American classmates. You are expected to communicate entirely in English, and such total immersion in the campus environment will be invaluable for your future studies.

        Personal academic monitoring

Small class sizes mean your instructors are able to monitor your progress carefully and know when you are ready for academic courses. The creation of an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) provides you with monthly grade reports and active advising coordinated with the staff at Woodbury University.
