About the ESL Transition Program
The Woodbury University ESL Transition Program provides a fast and academically focused route to regular university classes at Woodbury – combining practical English preparation with the opportunity to earn university credits as early as your first semester.
The program is divided into two phases:
Phase 1:
- Builds on basic language abilities by increasing fluency and academic skill for a successful passage to the more advanced use of English.
- Core classes include reading/writing/listening/speaking and grammar.

Phase 2:
- Combines English language classes with up to 3 credits of university classes to fully integrate into the Woodbury environment.

In the ESL Transition Program you can:

- Build study skills important to your academic success at Woodbury. This includes: develop research methods, exam taking tactics, time management, essay preparation, speed note taking and power-listening
- Personalize your progress through our online learning program and Guided Independent Learning projects
- Begin Woodbury University credit classes as soon as you reach our equivalent of TOEFL iBT 61
- Integrate seamlessly into Woodbury’s Southern Californian campus life
- Earn university credits while improving your English proficiency

Assured Progression to a Woodbury Degree Program
Enrolling into the ESL Transition Program gives you the security of knowing that you have satisfied the academic requirements for admission and have received the offer of a university place. In addition, your I-20 form is issued by the university and is valid for the entire duration of your studies. You have access to the entire choice of majors at Woodbury.
Reduced Fees
If you are accepted into the Woodbury University ESL Transition Program, you will be eligible for a Study Group International student tuition discount throughout your transition and undergraduate or graduate program.
Access to Woodbury Facilities
A comprehensive range of academic facilities and social opportunities at the University are available to you as an ISC student.
Personal Monitoring and Support
Each phase of the ESL Transition Program includes the creation and completion of an Individual Learning Plan (ILP). This provides you with weekly-individualized one-on-one counselling, and progress reporting to ensure maximum success within the program.
The ESL Transition Program is validated by Woodbury University and taught by specialists in English preparation. Your progress will be monitored at all times to make sure you remain on track to successfully complete the program. You will also benefit from regular assessment through examination and marked coursework.
Management of the International Study Center
The ESL Transition Program at the Woodbury University International Study Center is run by Study Group, working in partnership with Woodbury.
