Virtual Technology Classroom at Martin College

Creating a more comfortable and environmentally friendly classroom

June 2008

Virtual Technology Classroom at Martin College

We have installed our first virtual technology classroom on the Darlinghurst Campus at Martin College Sydney.

This is an investment by Study Group to provide an improved service to our students and teachers whilst ensuring we reduce the environmental impact of our activities.

Virtual technology replaces the normal desktop computer with a server/thin client combination which significantly reduces power consumption. Thin clients have a maximum power consumption of 17.2 Watts, opposed to the 61.44 Watts consumed by a regular desktop. By shifting computing complexity from the individual workstations to the network, we are liberating IT resources from unnecessary support and maintenance functions and providing users with fast, secure and flexible workstations.

It will also mean the classroom is cooler and quieter because the thin clients do not generate heat and do not require fans. This will result in a more comfortable classroom environment and savings on the costs of air conditioning.

Another advantage is that thin clients are smaller than desktop PCs. They leave more space on the desk for students’ books and papers.

We are very proud of our first virtual technology classroom and plan to install many more globally.
