Your pathway to study

Study Group offers a range of specialised engineering pathway programmes for international students, preparing them to meet the challenges of university life in the UK. Pathway programmes are taught in our International Study Centres at a number of top UK universities.

International Foundation Year

The International Foundation Year prepares international students to progress to year one of an undergraduate degree at university.

  • Prepares students to meet entry requirements and begin their university studies with confidence.
  • Offers a tailored combination of subject-specific modules and English language preparation.

Extended International Foundation Year

The Extended International Foundation Year gives extra support to international students before they progress to the International Foundation Year and then continue their chosen undergraduate degree.

  • For students who are unable to gain direct entry on to the International Foundation Year.
  • Offers training in English language and engineering.

International Year One


The International Year One is an intensive course, equivalent to the first year of an undergraduate degree.

  • Students progress to the second year of their chosen degree at university.
  • Offers modules in English and study skills, as well as engineering.

The University of Sheffield is internationally renowned for its engineering research and education. It attracts more Engineering research funding than Oxford or Cambridge.*

The University invests in fantastic facilities for its students, including the £81m undergraduate engineering building, the Diamond. Its graduates go on to great things, thanks to partnerships with global industry leaders such as Siemens, Boeing and Rolls-Royce.

The University of Lincoln offers students a broad knowledge of electrical and mechanical engineering. Its TEF gold rating reflects its commitment for delivering consistently outstanding teaching, learning and outcomes for its students.

Lincoln’s Engineering Hub is a centre of technical innovation, housing the latest machinery and engineering resources. The University also offers several laboratories, where students can undertake cutting-edge research. 94% of students on the BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering at Lincoln were satisfied with the learning resources on their course (NSS 2018).

The University of Sheffield

The University of Surrey

The University of Surrey is well-respected for its engineering degrees. In 2019, it was ranked 3rd in the UK for Electrical and Electronic Engineering and 5th for Chemical Engineering in the Guardian University Guide. Its flexible programme means students on certain courses can transfer between engineering courses before the second year, giving them time to discover their interests.

Surrey is at the forefront of mobile communications engineering, with its 5G Innovative Centre leading research into fifth generation mobile communications. Students also benefit from the University having a vast network of more than 2,300 partner organisations, with the option to take a professional training year in all undergraduate engineering degrees.

Liverpool John Moores University

Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) conducts world leading maritime and engineering research. 98% of the research submitted by the Department in the latest research assessment was considered world leading, of international importance or recognised internationally (Research Excellence Framework 2014).

The University prepares its students for top careers and its CareerSmart programme gives students the opportunity of a paid four-week work placement. 100% of BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering graduates are in work or further study six months after graduating (Destination of Leavers from Higher Education 2015/16).
