Linh’s graduate success story | Drawing on personal experience to support international students to succeed

Linh, an international student, stood on a university campus

In 2018 Linh travelled from Vietnam to begin her global higher education at the University of Huddersfield International Study Centre, which is delivered by Study Group in partnership with the University. Her experience created a special bond with the International Study Centre and supported her to progress and succeed at the University of Huddersfield, where she graduated with a BA (Hons) in Hospitality Business Management.

Little did Linh know that she would one day return to Study Group as a colleague.

While studying her foundation year with Study Group, Linh enjoyed a peek behind-the-scenes by seizing the opportunity to act as Head of Centre for the day.

Shadowing the Head of Centre, Linh attended meetings and learned more about student welfare, teaching priorities and longer term projects. After a busy day she declared it: “probably the best experience during my student life.”

“I would definitely love to be an inspirational teacher,” Linh said when handing the reins back to staff. “It is always a pleasure to share with others what I have learnt, or support people to improve and achieve their aims.”

Having now graduated from the University of Huddersfield with honours for her bachelor’s degree, Linh has realised her ambition by securing a job as Progress Coach with the University of Huddersfield International Study Centre.

“It's like the dream when I was young actually came true”

As a Progress Coach, Linh draws on her first-hand experience to support International Study Centre students to develop the soft skills required for a successful transition to the University of Huddersfield.

Linh says, “I give real life advice and can be a real example for them. I know every student has a very personalised student journey so I don't want to impose too much of my experience on them but I want to share my great university experience and my passion for studying, so I really hope I can pass that passion onto students. Students ask me a lot what the student life is like at the University and I think I am very passionate when I tell them about all the things that I had at the University of Huddersfield.”

On finding herself back as a gradate at the International Study Centre, Linh says: “It's like the dream when I was young actually came true. It's a very great experience to come back here.”
